Built by Kässbohrer's Setra brand — later absorbed into Daimler's EvoBus subsidiary — at the Neu-Ulm plant in Bavaria, Germany, the S 317 UL sits between the 12-meter 2-axle S 313 UL and the larger S 319 UL in the family lineup, offering high-capacity intercity service with the added stability of a 3-axle chassis. The "UL" designation stands for Überland (German for "over land", the regional/intercity service category in German bus operation), distinguishing the variant from the urban HU (Hochboden Überland) and tourist HD (HighDecker) configurations also offered in the MultiClass family. Common in Deutsche Bahn Regio Bus regional service and Eastern European intercity carriers through the 1990s, the S 317 UL was succeeded by the S 415 UL in 2001 when Setra introduced the TopClass and MultiClass 400 generation.
