About the Real LAZ-699 Turist

The LAZ-699 "Turist" is a large-class intercity bus produced by the Lviv Bus Factory (LAZ) in Lviv, then part of the Soviet Union and today in Ukraine, from 1964 to 2002. The first 699A appeared in 1964; the 699N followed in small industrial batches from 1972, and the definitive 699R arrived in 1978 with mass production from 1983. Early versions used a carbureted ZIL-375 V8 petrol engine of about 180 hp, so thirsty it was nicknamed "Obzhora" (glutton). With its rounded body and high-floor coach layout, the 699 became one of the most recognizable intercity buses across the USSR and stayed in service long after production ended.
